Sjögren’s Syndrome

Sjögren’s Syndrome

Sjögren’s syndrome is a chronic autoimmune condition that affects the body’s ability to make moisture. It most commonly causes dry eyes and dry mouth, but it can also affect many other systems in the body and bring symptoms that go far beyond dryness alone. For many people, Sjögren’s also involves fatigue, pain, brain fog, and the emotional weight of living with a condition that is often overlooked or misunderstood.

If you or someone you love is living with Sjögren’s syndrome, this page is here to offer a simple, supportive overview.

What it is

Sjögren’s syndrome happens when the immune system attacks the glands that make tears and saliva. This leads to the two hallmark symptoms of the disease: dry eyes and dry mouth. It can happen on its own, or it can occur alongside other autoimmune conditions such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis.

Even though dryness is the most recognized part of Sjögren’s, the condition can affect far more than the eyes and mouth. In some people, it also affects the joints, nerves, lungs, kidneys, skin, and other organs.

Common symptoms

The most common symptoms are dry eyes and dry mouth. Dry eyes may burn, itch, feel gritty, or become sensitive to light, and dry mouth can make swallowing, speaking, eating, or sleeping more difficult. Many people also experience fatigue, joint pain, muscle pain, brain fog, dry skin, dry nose, chronic cough, vaginal dryness, swollen glands, and trouble concentrating.

Some people also deal with mouth sores, dental problems, nerve pain, rashes, or changes in taste. Because symptoms can be broad and may mimic other chronic illnesses, diagnosis is often delayed.

How it can affect daily life

Living with Sjögren’s syndrome can affect comfort, communication, nutrition, work, sleep, and relationships. Dry eyes can make reading, screen use, driving, or being in wind or bright light more difficult, and dry mouth can make eating and talking uncomfortable. Fatigue and brain fog can add another layer of difficulty, making even ordinary routines feel heavier than they appear from the outside.

The condition can also be emotionally draining. Symptoms may seem small when described one by one, but together they can wear a person down over time and interfere with confidence, focus, and quality of life.

Common overlaps

Some people with Sjögren’s syndrome also have joint pain, nerve symptoms, chronic pain, or overlap with other autoimmune diseases such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. More serious complications can involve the lungs, kidneys, nervous system, or an increased risk of lymphoma in some patients. Dental problems and eye complications can also happen when dryness is ongoing and severe.

This does not mean everyone with Sjögren’s will have the same pattern, but it helps explain why the condition can feel much bigger than “just dryness.”

Gentle support

Support looks different for every person, but many people benefit from regular eye care, dental care, moisture support, symptom tracking, and long-term follow-up with healthcare professionals who understand autoimmune disease. Because there is no cure, treatment usually focuses on easing symptoms, protecting affected organs, and improving day-to-day function.

If you are living with Sjögren’s syndrome, please know that your discomfort, fatigue, pain, and frustration are real. You deserve support that sees the full impact of this condition and responds with compassion and respect.
